New Home

In the wake of Helene, our Fines Creek community has come together like never before. 💪❤

With support pouring in from organizations across the country, we’ve been able to help not just our own families, but also neighbors across Western North Carolina and even into Tennessee.

Important highlights of this recovery include beneficial, financial grants and donations for our community that have very much helped our Fines Creek. Hundreds of volunteers that include many of our local community members have helped neighboring counties and the people outside our State.

People working together, totaling over 5,000 volunteer hours helped a vast number of our many community families. Financial help and volunteer help was received from numerous North Carolina’s community families as well as other numerous in-state and out-of-state organizations came together to help and assist their fellow brothers and sisters.

💝 Thanks to generous donations, thousands have received essentials like food, clothing, cleaning supplies, pet food, heaters, household goods and other needed supplies.

Community progress is underway and Renovations and Upgrades!
The old cannery has seen major restoration:

  • Old tin roof removed, weakened rafters replaced
  • New 30-year steel roof, metal soffit and fascia installed
  • Interior cleared, ceilings repaired, broken windows removed
  • New barn door with a human-access door installed

Flood prevention and structural protection improvements:
The collapsed bank along Kirkpatrick Cove has been stabilized and pulled back.

  • A French drain was installed under pea gravel.
  • The concrete block of the building was sealed and guttering added.
  • Water no longer enters the back of the building.
  • An older drain leading to the creek was uncovered and the back drainage and guttering was joined to that drain reconnected.
  • Back windows facing Kirkpatrick Cove were blocked in to protect against glass breakage from road traffic.

The brick building is now a hub of activity:

  • Volunteer-built shelving throughout, paid for by donations.
  • Two new showers have been installed in the breezeway restrooms.
  • Washer, dryer, and water heater installed in the interior room adjourning the restrooms.
  • Volunteers framed the utility room, connected plumbing & wiring then installed donated appliances.
  • Doorways widened and a concrete ramp added to help move goods via pallet jacks and carts — and it’s working beautifully!

We’re deeply grateful for everyone’s time, energy, and generosity. 💚

Fines Creek Community Association’s Hurricane Helene Response

On September 26, Hurricane Helene devastated the region affecting communication, power and infrastructure. The Fines Creek area was flooded in low lying areas, residents lost power, trees barricaded roads and phone service unavailable. In a rural community when power is lost so is water from wells. Many people lost land lines and cell service. Bridges and culverts were washed away in the high water. Finally, people are moving again and helping their neighbors.

The Fines Creek Community Center and the Fines Creek Volunteer Fire Department served as a hub for rescue services, food, water, meals and clothing for this community and beyond.

We would like to thank the many, many people and organizations that have donated so much. Also the volunteers that have helped and continue to help with receiving, organizing and distributing food, clothing and water.
